Buying Guide

How to Choose an Infrared Sauna

Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air, infrared saunas use light waves to warm your body directly at lower temperatures (120–150°F). The result: a more comfortable session with many of the same recovery and circulation benefits. Here's what separates a great infrared sauna from an average one.

EMF Levels

Look for saunas with low-EMF or ultra-low-EMF carbon heaters (under 3 mG at seating distance). Reputable brands publish third-party EMF test results. This is especially important for full-body panels you'll sit near for extended sessions.

Spectrum Type

Far infrared heats deep tissue and is the most researched. Near infrared targets skin health and wound healing. Full-spectrum saunas combine far, mid, and near infrared for the broadest range of therapeutic benefits — ideal if you want one unit that does it all.

Heating Technology

Carbon panel heaters distribute heat evenly at lower surface temperatures and are energy-efficient. Ceramic rod heaters reach higher temps faster but create hot spots. Most modern saunas use carbon or a carbon-ceramic hybrid for the best balance.

Wood Type

Canadian Hemlock is budget-friendly and crack-resistant. Western Red Cedar adds natural aroma and antibacterial properties. Basswood is hypoallergenic and stays cool to the touch. Eucalyptus resists moisture and heat beautifully. Choose based on allergies, aesthetics, and budget.

Size & Capacity

1-person saunas fit tight spaces (~4×3 ft). 2-person models are the most popular for home use. 3–4 person saunas suit families or couples who want to stretch out. Always measure your space and confirm the unit fits through doorways during delivery.

Extras & Warranty

Chromotherapy lighting, Bluetooth speakers, ionizers, and red light therapy panels enhance the experience. A lifetime structural warranty signals confidence in build quality — don't settle for less than 5 years on heaters and electrical components.

FAQ

Infrared Sauna Questions

What temperature do infrared saunas reach?

Most infrared saunas operate between 120–150°F, significantly lower than traditional saunas (160–200°F). Despite the lower air temperature, infrared light penetrates 3–4 cm into tissue, raising your core temperature effectively and producing a deep sweat.

How long should an infrared sauna session last?

Start with 15–20 minutes and build up to 30–45 minutes as your body acclimates. Research studies showing health benefits typically used 15-minute sessions. Stay hydrated and exit if you feel lightheaded.

Are infrared saunas safe?

For most healthy adults, yes. Infrared saunas produce no steam, no fumes, and operate at lower temperatures than traditional saunas. Avoid use if you have cardiovascular conditions, are pregnant, or take medications that impair sweating. Consult your doctor first.

What's the difference between carbon and ceramic heaters?

Carbon panels distribute heat evenly across a large surface area at lower temperatures — more comfortable for long sessions. Ceramic rods heat up faster and reach higher temps but can create uneven hot spots. Most premium saunas now use carbon or carbon-ceramic hybrids.

Do infrared saunas use a lot of electricity?

No. A typical 2-person infrared sauna draws 1,500–1,800 watts — about the same as a hair dryer. A 30-minute session costs roughly $0.15–$0.30 in electricity, making them far more economical than traditional saunas.
